Informed, responsible deer management is vital to protect deer welfare and support biodiversity restoration. However, poor collaboration and limited understanding of deer populations hinder effective management. Drone surveys, training, and educational events can improve collaboration and practices.

In parts of the UK, populations of some deer species are thought to be increasing, affecting deer welfare and placing pressure on other wildlife and their habitats. Limited collaboration between stakeholders and a lack of robust data on deer populations are hindering effective, responsible management. These challenges lead to missed opportunities for effective decision-making and have serious implications for deer welfare and biodiversity. A more coordinated approach is urgently needed.

Drone surveys provide robust data on deer populations, enabling informed and effective management. When combined with best-practice training and public education days, they promote evidence-based management, encourage collaboration among wildlife managers, conservationists, rewilders, and other stakeholders, and build public understanding and trust in responsible deer management. This approach improves management, protects deer welfare, supports biodiversity, and strengthens public confidence.
