RFUK prioritises support for Environmental Human Rights Defenders (EHRDs). We support EHRDs to oppose extractive industries, illegal activities & abuses within fortress conservation in rainforests by promoting their land rights, supporting them to monitor, protect & thrive in their forest homes.

Traditional conservation policy and practice has historically failed to take into account forest and Indigenous Peoples’ rights and needs. In so doing, it has also failed to protect forests and biodiversity. EHRDs confront violence, intimidation, persecution and death while opposing destructive extractive industries, illegal activities harming ecosystems, communities and livelihoods. Our partners confronting abusive conservation methods have been subjected to similar threats.

We are working to enact a fundamental global shift towards a more effective, inclusive & sustainable method of conservation; a people-friendly approach that better protects forests, wildlife & communities. We assist EHRDs to safely do their work & draw attention to their cause by amplifying voices & protecting rights. This work is realised through local partners in the Congo Basin. Our ForestLink platform enables them to document & report environmental crimes & human rights abuses in real-time.
