We are now embarking on our second year of this project. Moss carder bees are in decline across the UK, with the Cornish Coast remaining one of their few sanctuaries. Continued surveying will allow us to better understand their distribution and habitat preferences, helping us to protect their future

Moss carder bees are in severe decline across the UK and are now restricted in distribution. The first year of this project allowed us to focus on surveying two key sites on the north Cornish coast: Penhale and Gwithian & Upton Towans. Only 7 Moss carder bees were found in total across the two targeted areas, fitting with our concerns about its low abundance. The more we can learn about where Moss carder bees live and what they need, the better chance we have of saving it from extinction.

Our dedicated Project Officer will target new areas of Cornwall and conduct surveys to gain greater knowledge about the distribution and abundance of Moss carder bees on the Cornish coast. Greater volumes of data gathered over several years will provide a more accurate picture of the Moss carder bee status. Targeting the recruitment of new volunteers using public talks, will enable us to increase the number of BeeWalks which will simultaneously raise awareness about this rare bee.
