At Voice magazine we support young people to attend professional arts events and meet artists for the first time. We work with those from low income and rural communities. Young people become young arts reviewers, taking part in workshops and choosing new experiences to explore, discuss and review.

Situation
Young people from less advantaged backgrounds often have little access to professional arts experiences or activities led by artists. Unlike a decade ago, secondary schools rarely have funding for artists in residence or trips, and arts education has declined for the 14+ age group. If you have never been inside your local theatre or art gallery, you are unlikely to attend a show or exhibition. Young people tell us that local arts provision is 'more for visitors, not us' (Abi, 17, Shropshire).
Solution
Voice magazine (voicemag.uk) gives young people the role of young arts reviewer. Our editorial team provide training and organise group trips, free tickets, transport and a safe space to discuss responses, likes and dislikes. Reviewers can post their reviews on the Voice website for peers or artists to read. We organise backstage tours and 'meet the artist' sessions, where professionals talk about their work and career path, raising awareness of jobs in the arts as well as local opportunities.
