Situation
Communities living in poverty in the Global South face some of the worst impacts of the climate crisis, despite contributing least to global emissions. In Nkhata Bay North, Malawi, where most families depend on small-holder farming, the devastating effects of climate change are routinely felt. The area suffers from severe flooding and droughts, impacting harvests every year. Resulting economic deprivation and health issues impacts the community’s ability to recover after these climate events.
Solution
We will support 5 beekeeping and 5 livestock-rearing cooperatives to form. Temwa will provide initial materials and training for the groups, including beehive construction and pigs and pig-breeding infrastructure. Temwa will help the groups develop market linkages and value addition for their products. Using these sustainable, reliable livelihood opportunities, combined with business development and market access, the groups will then have income sources resilient to extreme weather events.
