Pause is a national charity that works to improve the lives of women who have experienced – or are at risk of – the removal of more than one child from their care, Pause’s vision is a society where no family experiences the removal of a child more than once.

Once a child has been removed from a family’s care, the system is structured so the services and support follow the child. This leaves the family struggling to cope with the difficulties that led to the child being taken into care while facing the additional trauma of losing a child. The trauma of each removal compounds and exacerbates existing vulnerabilities, contributing to a vicious and damaging cycle and a worsening outlook for families and children.

Pause offers intensive, relationship-based support through our core and REACH programmes, alongside influencing and partnership work to improve systems and services. Our aim is to support women to build more stable lives, while contributing to longer-term change so fewer families experience repeat removals of children into care. After more than ten years and two independent evaluations there is a growing body of evidence that shows that this is possible.
