Supporting female educators improves girls’ learning, reduces safeguarding risks and builds inclusive education systems in conflict-affected countries. This project will fund teacher training for women in Sudan, South Sudan and Somaliland, equipping future teachers and education leaders.

Girls in Sudan, South Sudan and Somaliland face considerable barriers to education, including poverty, early marriage, displacement and insecurity. These barriers are worsened by a shortage of qualified female teachers. In Somaliland, less than 1 percent of secondary teachers are female and many schools across the region have no female staff. Without women in schools, girls lack role models and safeguarding support. Few women in leadership means policies and training rarely address girls' needs.
WTI tackles the shortage of female teachers and leadership by supporting women at two levels. We offer scholarships for women to train as teachers, thereby increasing the number of qualified female educators in under-resourced contexts. We also fund postgraduate scholarships in Education to develop female leaders who can strengthen teacher training, influence inclusive policy and improve safeguarding. Scholars receive academic, pastoral and reintegration support to maximise long-term impact.
