In England and Wales there are 37,000 blind and partially sighted children and young people. Around 50% have an additional special educational need or disability. The reality is that they face additional barriers compared to their sighted peers. Only 1 in 4 blind and partially sighted people of working age are in employment. Two thirds of blind people are living on or below the poverty line. There is a proven correlation between vision impairment and depression and anxiety in children.
RSBC’s Families First Service supports blind and partially sighted children and young people from birth to the age of 25. We provide the whole family with bespoke one-to-one support focusing on emotional wellbeing both in person and online. Our Family Practitioners are trained professionals who provide emotional and practical support tailored to each families needs.
