At Horatio’s Garden we know that people with spinal injuries need natural beauty to support their recovery. This is why we build and look after extraordinary gardens in the heart of NHS spinal injury centres. Our gardens are a peaceful haven and provide garden therapy, arts and social activities.

Approximately 4,700 people become spinal cord injured every year. Spinal injury can happen to anyone at any time. The results are life-changing and devastating. Life may never be the same again for you or for your family and friends around you. On average, you will spend between three to nine months in a specialist spinal injury centre often far from home. You are 56% more likely to experience mental health issues with a fourfold increased risk of suicide.

We know how critical it is to have an incredible garden on offer right outside the hospital ward as a transformational part of the rehabilitation pathway. Places for reflection and adjustment, privacy and solace, joy and companionship to all who need it. The charity’s vision is to sustainably grow thriving communities and biodiverse gardens in all 11 NHS spinal injury centres in the UK. To date we have opened eight gardens and are currently designing our ninth, in Middlesbrough.
