In Birmingham from 1st April 2022 to 31st March 2023, domestic abuse was one of the top three reasons as to why people presented as homeless to the city council homelessness service. This means that domestic abuse survivors fleeing their perpetrators might end up in temporary accommodations or homeless, with no means to heal from their trauma. WAITS believes that survivors should not feel punished for ending their abuse.
The WAITS Women’s Refuge doesn’t just offer a roof over the heads of survivors. We support women on a one-to-one basis, to address issues such as accessing welfare benefits, housing issues, legal aid, domestic abuse, physical and mental health, the fear of crime and much more. Such women can only begin their healing journey in an environment that empowers their growth. Therefore, we are looking into raising funds to build more refuge accommodations their abusers and help them rebuild their lives
