Situation
Lewisham is the 35th most deprived local authority nationally and one of the most diverse, 70% of young people are from the global majority and 40% are living in poverty. Young people have few opportunities to gather in groups without drawing negative attention. We surveyed over 200 young people and 65% told us they want someone close to their age – a peer mentor, youth worker or therapist – who they can confidently share their feelings with, and who will show them love, attention and care.
Solution
Come As You Are is intended to serve as a Youth Centre space within the Albany staffed with a crew of Peer Mentors, focusing on connection, creation and community. There will be opportunities for underrepresented young people to develop their ideas and professional skills across the arts including music, drama, dance, and creative writing; as well as have a welcoming space within their community where their decisions are respected and their voices are heard.
