Situation
Conserving pine martens which are critically endangered in England. In addition, the health of English woodlands has been declining for decades. The lack of predators like pine martens has led to over-abundance of grey squirrels and other small mammals. This hampers woodland regeneration, as trees and other plants are damaged or eaten before they can mature. Pine marten reintroduction will help to restore woodlands to a healthier natural state, with strengthened diversity and resilience.
Solution
England’s pine martens are critically endangered. Reintroductions to Dartmoor and Exmoor will support their national survival and repair broken links in our woodland ecology. Community support is vital to project success. Learning hubs will raise awareness of the need to restore and re-connect our woodlands, and prepare local people to live alongside thriving pine marten populations again. Project staff will train volunteers in pine marten monitoring techniques and woodland enhancement work.
