When Great Western Hospital opened in 2002 it's emergency department was designed for 48,000 patients a year. Demand has now doubled and pressure will only increase as Swindon's population is one of the fastest growing in the country. It is difficult for clinical teams to work efficiently in such an overcrowded emergency department. Despite committed and caring staff, this means that patients' experiences are not as good as they should be and waiting times for treatment are longer.

A large urgent and emergency care development on the Great Western Hospital site has been approved by the Department of Health & Social Care. This enabled a new Urgent Treatment Centre to be built and open in Summer 2022. A new Emergency Department now under construction will open in Summer 2024. These developments will expand capacity & bring together more emergency care services in the same location. Your support will help to improve patients' experience when receiving urgent & emergency care.
