For many people in Ethiopia access to basic health care is limited and they die with distressing symptoms. HE provides free palliative care for patients in their homes. Due to the recent economic and political upheaval in Ethiopia retaining HE’s expert staff with living wages is vital.

Palliative care is a relatively new concept of care in Ethiopia. HE is the only non-government organisation dedicated to specialist palliative care in the country. For many reasons including the recent civil war, inflation in Ethiopia is approximately 30% resulting in a huge increase in HE’s running costs. HE has worked hard to support and train a highly skilled workforce. In order to continue to attract and retain staff HE needs to pay their programme staff a wage that keeps pace with inflation
As palliative care is in its infancy in Ethiopia, HE has to provide the specialist training needed to provide this care. By paying a living wage such specialist staff will be encouraged to continue working for this organisation. With highly trained and motivated staff HE will continue providing end of life care and education to Health Care Professionals to widen access to palliative care across the country. HE’s staff are its greatest asset and so we have made their livelihoods our top priority.
