Chenna Primary school in Debark was occupied by rebel forces during the conflict in northern Ethiopia. When they withdrew, five classrooms had been destroyed and the furniture burnt. This project will rebuild the classrooms and restore the facilities so that children can get back to school.

    Situation

Chenna primary school used to serve 725 pupils from grades 1 to 8, they had 11 classrooms, a staffroom and a director’s office. Last year, rebel forces occupied the school: by the time they left 5 classrooms were totally destroyed and the furniture had been burnt for firewood. Now, there isn’t enough space for all the pupils: higher grades study under trees, furniture has been shared so no classroom has enough, and pupils are so demotivated that 275 of them haven’t yet returned to school.

    Solution

The community value their school and have started rebuilding what they can. Foundations and wooden frameworks have already been built for new classrooms. But they are not a wealthy community and are all trying to recover from the damaging occupation. We will help them finish rebuilding the five classrooms that were destroyed. We will build cement floors, plaster the walls, construct a roof and furnish the classrooms so that pupils can return to school with high quality learning environments.
