An old church building, situated adjacent to the Beatson Oncology site at Gartnavel General Hospital, has been made available to Tak Tent by the NHS. These premises will provide us with much needed room for expansion – however the building does require total renovation and repair to transform it into our new drop in centre and headquarters.

    Situation

With life expectancy rising, quite simply there are more and more people in our communities – which sadly means many more cancer patients and families coping with and adapting to living with the disease. Cancer does not just affect the elderly. Tak Tent also provides specialist care and groups for young adult patients, recognising the fact that their needs are totally different to others. Currently we work from the former nurses flat in the grounds of Gartnavel which is no longer appropriate. More space is required with dedicated facilities for the specialist services we provide. The renovation of the building will result in a fully equipped support centre with specific rooms, areas and resources to meet the current and future needs of the patients and families we work with. This will include a reception / welcome area, a room for group meetings, a quiet space for information books and resources, treatment rooms for therapy and individual counselling and access to computers to search for information on cancers and their treatments. It will also include additional space for use by both Tak Tent and the local community for education, training, workshops and various meeting purposes, and much needed increased office space Ultimately, the new location will enable Tak Tent to provide, at the very minimum, twice as many clients (over 5,000) with an improved quality of treatment in a much more accessible and beneficial environment. The total project budget is £1.7 million, £1.32 million of which will be raised by the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust. The remaining £485,000 has to be raised by Tak Tent for the capital project, as well as £150,000 annual running costs.
